Friday Favorites

I love working with and training dogs. But the past year and a half I haven’t worked with ours much. It’s showing. Sometimes things in life require attention, and that’s been the case for me. But now that life is normal and okay and good, it’s time to get back to working with the dogs.

What I think I love most about working with dogs is the relationship, the teamwork. Just think about it-another species of intelligent animal wants to engage with humans in work and play. Blows me away!

I also love watching dogs figure things out. I particularly love scent detection work. Watching a dog find scent, then follow it to source, then tell his handler, “Hey, it’s here. It’s right here” fills me with wonder every time.

Below is a video of one of my favorites of Jack’s searches from Nose Work class from May 2013. This was a tough hide, but he worked hard, never gave up, and found source.

Playing Catch Up

This seems to be a week of playing catch up. I’m totally off schedule with my blog posts. Feel like I’m way behind on sleep. Can’t keep straight in my brain even what day of the week it is. Sometimes life just gets too busy, and I totally let myself get sucked under.

So I’m going to spend the rest of the week trying to practice mindfulness, to be present in each moment, to explore what each moment teaches me.

Right now I’m on the Music City Star train on the way home from work. The gentle sway and rhythmic clickety-clack of the wheels on the track are soothing after a long day in the clinic.

How do you make yourself slow down when you get caught up in the busyness of every day life?

Fifteen for Thirty Yoga Challenge

Starting today, I’m challenging myself to practice 15 minutes of yoga every day for 30 consecutive days. Besides the physical benefits, I need the prayer and meditation time. Call me nuts, you won’t be the first, but my lack of attention to my physical health has negatively impacted my spiritual health. I think  it all goes back to self care and treating the body as a temple.

So, anyone want to join me? #15for30

Friday Favorite

Three words: Brittany Farina Art. Love her work. Love her style. Love that she gives back to animal rescue.

Go here to check out the coloring book she created to support Southeast German Shepherd Rescue. And what about this one she did for Amazing Grace Horse Sanctuary-beautiful!

I bought this tee shirt, necklace, and magnet a few months ago. They are gorgeous! IMG_0570

Can’t wait to get the order I just placed for two of the coloring books, a tee shirt, and a pair of earrings.

If you order, use coupon code fam-and-friends for 25% off an order of at least $20.

Is there an artist or craftsman whose work you admire?

When Writing is Hard

This week writing sucks. I hate my story. I hate trying to make the plot work. I hate even thinking about it. I don’t want to even look at the file.

But I wrote a little bit today anyway.

I had to.

I’m a writer.

What do writers do when writing is hard?

They write.

Friday Favorite-Sunday Edition

Yikes!! Forgot to post on Friday, and forgot to schedule a post for today-so this is late. 😦

But all I have today is a video. An amazing video. I share because after just a few days this video has done at least as much as six weeks of physical therapy.

Don’t be put off by the 40 minute run time. You will think it’s only been 10 minutes when you finish. And don’t be intimidated by “yoga.” Jen Hilman, the instructor, puts you completely at ease. I’m a yoga novice, less than novice, and I got so much benefit from this routine.

Do it. I double downward dog dare you.

Rediscovering Yoga

Saturday morning I attended a yoga and write in for Camp NaNoWriMo. Until Saturday I hadn’t practiced yoga in decades. Wow! I felt amazing afterward. So much that I’ve done at least ten minutes of yoga everyday since.

I’ll definitely be posting more about this in the future.

Have you ever practiced yoga? Do you have a type of physical discipline you just can’t do without?
